Following liberalizing economic reforms in the late 1980s and early 1990s, India is now the world's second fastest growing economy, as well as its second most populous. Processing of cottonseed in involves a number of steps. The first step is its entry into the shaker room where, through a number of screens and air equipment, twigs, leaves and other trash are removed. The cleaned seed is then sent to gin stands, similar to those in cotton saw gins, where the linters are removed from the seed.

Cotton seed oil is used in several products. Depending on its stage of refinement, it can be used in snack foods, mayonnaise, margarine, baking or frying oils, explosives, cosmetics, rubber, soap, insecticides and many other products. Foodstuff cottonseed oil has superior nutritive qualities.

Cotton seed hulls are mainly used for animal feed, and cottonseed oil is used as cooking oil, an ingredient in salad dressing, cosmetics, soap, and as a carrier for agricultural sprays. Cottonseed is also used for fertilizers and feed for cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, fish and shrimp.

India's cottonseed production is estimated to be around 35% of its cotton output of over 4.5 million tons. Nearly 80% of the cottonseed is crushed for oil while the rest goes for feed. Nearly 95% of the output and area under cotton belong to these nine states.
Cotton is a soft fiber that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant. The fiber is most often spun into thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth in clothing today. Cotton production is very efficient, in the sense that, ten percent or less of the weight is lost in subsequent processing to convert the raw cotton bolls into pure fiber.
