Handloom carpets: A
brief overview Some must buy
handicraft items one
should buy are
Its amazing! A matter of
pride! The mark of
tradition that has been
carried down over
hundreds of years still
remains as it is even in
the technological
upheaval of todays
world. Handloom carpets
maintain that
traditional weaving
pattern following the
same style and
techniques with the use
of the same tools that
were practiced years
ago.
Handloom carpets are
actually hand knotted
carpets that come up
invariably in three
different styles.
Traditionally woven on
the wooden loom with a
mounted warp on it,
where cotton is the most
common fiber used as
warp. Even silk warps
are used but cotton is
preferred. The primary
reason is its low cost
and easy availability.
Cotton used in the
handloom carpets can be
of various thicknesses
which decide the
stiffness of the end
product. This quality of
cotton doesnt allow the
weaving process to get
loose and the shape of
the carpet thus remains
intact.
The woolen and silk
handloom carpets are
woven in a special
technique. It is an
alteration of knots and
wefts where the knots
are wrapped around the
warps. In the horizontal
movement of lines, the
weaving process is
conducted. The
combination of silk and
wool is always
formulated in a ratio
and thats vital because
the softness and the
neatness in weaving
largely depend on this
proportion.
Well regarding the three
patterns of knot, Sneha,
the Persian knot, is
very famous. This is
basically a single knot
named after the Sneha,
town of Persia.
Traditionally these
carpets were made there
although now, artisans
of other places do weave
the same.
Ghiordes is another hand
knot popular among the
Turks. This name too has
come up from the weaving
city of Turkey. Unlike
Sneha, this is a double
knot but with lesser
neatness and refinement
than the single knots.
The technique that
separates the single
knot from the double
knot is a very fine
difference. Actually
carpet weavers tie the
single knot without any
imposition. It is done
uniquely for a single
time to maintain the
clarity of design
patterns and order of
the surface. But in case
of double knots, the
clarity of distinct
patterns and shapes are
omitted.
Single knots are more
used for wall carpets
and Persian wall carpets
are known all over the
world. Handloom carpets
for flooring, etc. are
mostly made of double
knots. Apart from these
knots, a third pattern
of handloom carpeting is
the Tibetan knot. This
is yet a special
technique where the
carpet forms a creased
pattern with uneven
cutting of pile.

coverings or Chain
stitch Rugs are made of
wool or Silk yarn and
cotton yarn. Intricate
needlework by creating a
variety of traditional
and modern designs and
colors in these rugs
reflects a fine
craftsmanship of the
worker.
In handloom carpets, the
thickness is regulated
by the nature of yarn
and density of knots.
Even the ply and pile
height play significant
roles. For a woolly
designing pattern the
height of the pile used
is more. Generally in he
woolen carpets the knots
vary from 30 to 170 I
numbers per every square
inch. Thus you can make
it out from here, that
for a more sophisticated
look and fine quality
more knots are
preferable.
Silk or art silk used in
handloom carpeting
require much tediousness
in the making of knots.
For achieving the utmost
refinement, knots per
square inch can reach
till 625 in numbers. The
minimum is 225 to bring
out the pattern of style
in silk handloom
carpets.
Salute to those weavers
who have dedicated their
whole life in creating
such wonderful patterns.
Reflection of tradition
and great pieces of art!

Beautiful Silk
Kashmiri carpet is
always part of
Kashmiri
craftsmanship.
Silk
Kashmiri carpets are
known the world over
for two things:
Obviously Silk
Kashmiri carpets are
beautiful beside
that, they are
always hand-woven
and they are always
hand knotted.
A Silk Kashmir
carpet is a long
life investments-it
is expensive but
worth it…no other
carpets in world can
match the beauties,
perfect ness, and
dedicated
craftsmanship of
Silk Kashmiri
carpets or rugs. A
relatively simple
Silk Kashmiri carpet
of size 2 feet by 3
feet would took up
to 5-6 months to
complete. Each Silk
Kashmiri carpet is
considered to be a
never-before seen
piece of hand-made
art. Hence the life
of these Silk
Kashmiri carpet is
80 – 100 years
making them
virtually a lifetime
purchase.
Most important
aspect of
determining its
durability and value
of beautiful Silk
Kashmiri carpet is
knotting of carpet.
In addition to its
design. Basically,
the more knots per
square inch, the
greater its value
and durability.
Count the number of
knots on the reverse
of carpet in any one
square inch.
Silk Kashmiri carpet
weaving in Kashmir
was not originally
indigenous but is
thought to have come
in by way of
Persia.
Silk Kashmiri carpet
weaving is therefore
strongly reflective
of Persian styling.
Till today most
designs are
distinctly Persian
with local;
variations. One
example, however, of
a typical Kashmiri
design is the tree
of life. Persian
design not
withstanding, any
carpet woven in Kashmir is referred
to as Kashmiri. The
Silk Kashmiri
carpets are made
predominantly in the Srinagar area of
Kashmir , and
generally confined
to the men of the
family, though
nowadays, women are
also entering the
trade. These
exquisite creations
are hand-knotted on
the warp threads,
one at a time, in
accordance to a
strict code of
colors in the order
of their appearance
in the pattern.
Often the code is
lyric into a song,
which is hummed by
the knotters at the
time of weaving. The
knotted product is
clipped with shears
to smoothness, and
then treated with
several brightening
and protective
chemical washes. The
color-way of Silk
Kashmir carpet and
its details
differentiate it
from any other
carpet. And while on
the subject of
colors, it should be
kept in mind that
although the colors
of Silk Kashmiri
carpets are more
subtle and muted
than elsewhere in
the country, only
chemical dyes are
used-vegetable dyes
have not been
available now for
hundred years.
KEEP IN MIND
WHILE CHOOSING A
SILK KASHMIR CARPETS

* Whether it has
been made of silk
pile on silk base,
silk pile on cotton
base, silk and wool
on cotton base or

or rugs are made on

* The number of
knots on the reverse
of the carpet;
whether one or more
line in the design
has been omitted
completely in which
case the pattern
looks lopsided.
* Whether any
element in the
design has been
wrongly woven so
that one motif is
larger or smaller at
one end than the
corresponding motif
at another end, etc.
* Whether each motif
or element of design
has clear, crisp
outlines; blurred
edges indicate a
fault in the
weaving.
* Whether the edges
of the Silk Kashmiri
carpets or rugs are
crooked as if it had
been incorrectly
mounted on the
frame, so that one
end is broader than
another.
Manufacturing &
Processing
Looming The
fascinating Kashmiri
carpet is a product
of painstaking
Shetting knotts
workmanship. From
the blueprint taleem
to a finished carpet
is a saga of an art
perfected over
centuries
Kashmiri carpets are
indeed beautiful and
aesthetic works of
art and their
history can be
traced back to their
more famous brethren
from Persia.
Intricate and lush
spreads of design
and delicate
weaving, Kashmiri
carpets are born out
of the hard work of
many Kashmiri
craftsmen.
A fascinating aspect
of carpet weaving in
Kashmir is its
blueprint called
taleem. The taleems
are long, narrow
pieces of brown
paper covered with
interminable rows of
twists, curves and
hieroglyphs. A
taleem for a seven
foot long carpet is
about three inches
wide and runs into a
hundred meters. This
is then Clippingcut
into meter-long
strips for ease of
handling. The
intricate carpet
design takes months
toWashing Carpet
learn. The actual
weaving begins after
that. Kashmiri
carpets are hand-
knotted. A
hand-knotted carpet
takes several months
or more than a year
– depends on the
size - to make.
We manufacture
carpets in Silk as
well as in Wool.
Silk carpets are
delicate, have a
distinct sheen, are
velvety soft to
touch. There are a
few qualities in
silk, ranging from
pure ( silk on silk
) to a mixture (
silk on cotton ).
These carpets have
400 to 900 knots per
square inch and can
rise up to 1,600
knots per square
inch.
Woolen carpets are
available in range
of qualities. The
better the quarpet.
Woolen carpet could
have 100 to 600
knots per slity of
wool, the softer it
is to touch. It
makes thinner folds
and is more
flexible. It also
has the sheen of
silk. The finer the
carpet, the more are
the number of knots
per square inch of
the caquare inch.
The range of Kashmir
carpets comes in
widely famed designs
named after Iranian
cities like Kashan,
Kirman, Ardabil,
Meshad, Qum,
Faraghan, Hamadan,
Bokhara, Tabriz,
Isfaan, Neen,
Zamanshah etc.
Kashmir carpet is a
craze, a
connoisseur’s
delight, a cherished
acquisition and,
above all, an
intimate friend. It
givens years of
wears and yet
provides an aura of
elegance. It floors
homes and yet adorns
the décor.
Kashmiri carpets are
a long time
investments .It can
be as cheaper as u
pay for a handkerchief
or it can be the
most expensive
purchase of your
Kashmir trip . But
one thing is sure if
you didn't buy a
carpet during your
visit you are surely
missing the art of
Kashmir , for what
it is world
renowned.
Kashmir is not the
origin of carpet
weaving the art come
from Persia. These
carpets are famous
for two things- they
are hand made and
they are always
knotted, never
tufted , the more
knots per square
inch, the greater
its value and
durability. Also
there are single and
double-knotted
carpets. A single
knotted carpet is
fluffier and more
resistant to touch
than the double
knotted. Knotting of
the carpet & yarn is
the most important
features. The yarn
used normally is
silk, wool or silk
and wool. Woolen
carpets always have
a cotton base.
The fascinating
combinations of
colors & artistry
makes the Kashmiri
carpet a prized
possession.
